I think Spahr's might be the main reason it's a good thing to be from Houma. Especially now that I live far away and fly in every once in a while, because it means a mandatory stop at Spahr's on the way home. I will schedule my flight to touch down in time for a big plate of fried catfish and a big glass of sweet tea. In fact I'm actually sad that this time when I come down we have dinner reservations at Restaurant August and thus will miss my Spahr's ritual. It's just that good. Having them in Houma itself was nice for a couple years, but I'm really glad they're back where they belong. I remember the rule in Driver's Ed was we could go as far as Spahr's and then we had to turn back. Made it feel like we were really going somewhere.

Ambiance- 3 (10%) Nothing fancy, but the staff is inviting. When you walk in the table section is to your right- tables somewhat closely spaced. Cleanliness- 4 (20%) Tables clean, open areas well kept. Restrooms well kept. Service- 4 (25%) We received prompt service. Never had to wait for water glasses to be refilled. Food brought our promptly. Food- 5 (35%) The stuffed mushrooms were awesome, my friend really enjoyed the gumbo, and we both enjoyed the ahi tuna- super fresh and seared to perfection Value- 4 (10%)- We had an assortment of appetizers-which was plenty for us sharing.V

On our way back from Morgan City we decided to stop and have some dinner. It was pretty good. We started with crawfish bread and crawfish hush puppies and the seafood platter as an entree. The crawfish bread was good. It seemed like they took french bread, added crawfish etoufee and cheese, and baked it. You should definitely try it. The crawfish hush puppies were also good. It seemed like a regular hushpuppie with etoufee inside. The seafood platter came with shrimp, catfish, crab claws and a stuffed crab. It was supposed to come with oysters, but thanks to the oil spill, no oysters were available. I wouldn't have gotten them anyway, but it does suck if someone were to want oysters. The platter was good. The stuffed crab was very good. The fried seafood was atop a bed of fries and onion rings. It is a lot of food. Splitting it would be wise. They have Abita S.O.S. beer. It costs $9, but. 75 cents goes to those affected by the oils spill. It is a pretty big bottle at over a pint. The restaurant overlooks the water and there are a few small camps you can view from the dining area. The staff wears uniforms that resemble oilfield workers. Everyone we encountered was professional and friendly. If your in the area, or are willing to make the drive to Des Allemands, Spahr's is worth the trip.

While I was in New Orleans, I read about this place as a very good off-the-beaten-path restaurant. Since I love exploring places and not being confined to just the city I am visiting, I gladly drove out to Des Allemands to check this place out. The setting was awesome: a sunset reflected across the bayou contrasting the rising moon, in the middle of nowhere. I saw down, and ordered the Seafood Gumbo to start and the catfish chips for my entree. A runner brought out the Gumbo, and said "hot sauce and crackers?" Me, having never had gumbo before, said "I don't know, what do you recommend?" and he didnt know what I meant and I explained. He said he would be right back. The waiter came out and said "Sir, it's come to my attention that you've never had gumbo before!! Here, try this." He handed me a shaker of File, as well as tabasco and saltines. I asked what the file was and he said "It's a secret gumbo ingredient which really brings out the flavor. Use it liberally!" I did, and the gumbo was incredible. The catfish chips came out as a gigantic platter, piled high with crispy fried pieces of catfish which were very good. The portion was so huge though. When I threw in the towel, the waiter came by and asked if I had room to try to bread pudding. I said sure, and waited. Served was the bread pudding with rum sauce. It was incredible. Unfortunately, this was all such a long time ago that I cannot describe it more. I would definitely go back if i am ever in New Orleans again!!!!

Ate here after a swamp tour down the road and had a good lunch. The gumbo/fried shrimp po boy combo hit the spot.

This is a great place to stop to grab some stellar fried catfish and onion rings! Nestled right off of the main highway, this is a true little oasis in the middle of nowhere. We were told by some locals to try this place on our way back from the New ORleans airport from Houma and boy, were they spot on! It appears that the restaurant has recently moved to this pleasant and wonderful location! There is a lovely bayou with little houses which set the scene and some nice lawn decor to get you in the mood for eating some quality fried food. This is a must-stop on your way to the airport! Just know that you don't come to watch your waistline and don't leave with any regrets!

The crayfish cheese bread is literally the best thing we had during our trip to new orleans. We even got an order to go. I still remember how great it was. Just like the locals say - the bloodys are really good here. The people were nice also. The catfish was good, not amazing.
(4)Ron K.
Great lunch, service was excellent and food was outstanding with a great value.
(4)Annette F.
Known for their catfish chips the menu is very appealing. My favorite place to sit is looking out to the bayou and lake. It is a beautiful bird sanctuary.
(4)Casey B.
This is a serious seafood restaurant! I would not put it in the same league as mosca's or middendorf's, but still worth a visit for lunch if you are driving to/from Cajun Country. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and it was just want i wanted. Well executed, good portion, and good price. But the real reason to come here is the fried seafood. I saw a gentlemen order a combo seafood plate that looked to die for. Their portions are great! My table did enjoy the crawfish hush puppies. Who said Cajuns weren't innovative? Finally, my buddy ordered the mahi mahi and he really liked it. The waitress was on top of her game and the atmosphere and customers are just what you would want for this place. I'm sure i will be back one day....

You have to try the catfish chips they are the best arround. I have been eating at spars for years.
(4)A.B. D.
I don't have much on the libation selection list. However, the tuna salad appetizer is well worth your time and $ spent. The wait staff etc., when we went, were skilled. Some of their selections are super rich, but good. It's a nice experience, for anyone to try at least once.

I recently got off a plane in New Orleans and was dreading the two hour drive home. I called Spahr's and placed a pick up order from memory of the menu. I had the fried shrimp platter and some seafood gumbo. The shrimp were large and fried perfectly. WOW is all I can say about the gumbo. Great flavor done by a seasoned chef. Awesome place!
(4)Matt R.
Spahr's is the best place in Des Allemands to get some good fried seafood... and benefits from very little competition. A buddy of mine and I stopped in after a round of golf at La Tours. We enjoyed some crawfish bread and the stuffed crab plate. Both were as good as we were expecting. We sat at the bar; the bartender was friendly. BOTTOM LINE: We stopped in for some good fried seafood and left satisfied.
(4)Christopher W.
Was on my way with some friends for a bike ride down on Grand Isle and we stopped in for lunch. I was surprised to find no whole catfish on the menu since Des Allemands is famous for its catfish. I ordered the catfish chips which was like nuggets and they were very good, much better than your average fish nugget. A must stop on the way down especially since you don't have many choices. Don't forget to go take a peak at the bayou in the back, its a beautiful area.

So we came back and glad we did. After the bad service and credit card fiasco my mom and I swore we would never come back. But we walked in to check and see if the credit card had benne found. The manager found it and apologized profusely saying they should have followed up more. So we decided to try eating there again. This time we were seated right away, orders taken right away, and had our food piping hot in 15 minutes. The server kept refilling drinks and was very attentive. The food tasted much better cooked fresh rather than being forgotten. Glad we have them a second chance. But this experience does show how one bad server can spoil a restaurants reputation very quickly

Traveling through and wanted some seafood. Was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. Service was good, food was good, atmoshere was great. Nice and clean restaurant! Had the crab cake minis, crawfish stew and bread pudding. Crab cake minis we're slightly over cooked, but good. Crawfish stew was slightly underseasoned and the bread pudding left much to be desired. At first we ordered sweet tea, but it had a stale tea taste to it, so we ordered water and again with the taste, so I came to the conclusion that it's the local water. Ended up ordering wine with dinner, which is what I should have done in the beginning. Scenery out the window provided us a show when the local alligater came up for dinner out of the local bayou. If I should find myself passing through Des Allemonds again, I will stop back in for a meal. Definitely worth a second visit to further explore the menu!

Spahr's is known for their Bloody Mary and it is very well deserved. When I used to live in Houma I would stop by here just for one of them on my way to New Orleans. They are spicy, strong and smooth...all things I require for my Bloody Mary. Recently I stopped in again and had the pleasure of dining in. We ordered a few apps and they were amazing. Buffalo shrimp-perfectly cooked and seasoned and crawfish bread-so damn good we were fighting over the last piece. You think I'm joking...I assure you I'm not. If my dining partner wasn't so darn cute, I'd have gladly stabbed him with my fork to get that last piece. Luckily for me he's also a gentleman and let me have it. Sucker ;) Service was friendly and prompt and the view of the beautiful alage topped bayou in the back can't be beat. If you're in the area do yourself a favor and stop at Spahr's.
(4)Rick F.
We have lunched here a few times recently. Food is better than years ago. Convenient "pit stop" on the Lafayette to New Orleans U.S. 90. Good parking, full bar, bayou views out back. Worth a stop! Rick

This place is a hit if you like deep fried foods (and seafood). I ordered their cat fish and chips ($14.99) which comes with toast and tartar sauce. The cat fish strips were smaller than what I'm used to, but came with several pieces (rather than just two large ones like anywhere else). This made them easy to dip and bite. The fish was prepared well because it wasn't too greasy, there wasn't any uncooked batter, and there was a decent amount of actual meat per batter ratio. Overall, these were awesome fish and chips. My other coworkers orders crawfish pasta and they enjoyed it. The only thing you might want to watch out for is the portion size as they tend to be large, but mostly because of the fries. Most of us did not finish our fries. One person in our group ordered a kids meal and that looked like a normal size to me (but even she didn't finish it). The service speed can be spotty during peak hours due to the amount of customers. We ordered and received our foods in a timely manner, but it literally took about 30 minutes to get our checks back. Granted, we split the check 7 ways, but we didn't think it would take that long. They ended up added the total and multiplying it by (1/7). Next time we should tell them to split it before hand. Overall I recommend this place to anyone looking for some good cat fish and chips (fries).
(4)Ryan B.
Five stars for catfish chips and gatoritas! Plenty of elbow room and a back yard for kids. Sports on TV and full bar. This place is more than a local favorite. Go early on the weekends and don't expect anything different than a great family restaurant.
(5)Kalita N.
Food was absolutely delicious and service was excellent! Haven't been here in a long time but will def come back
(5)Susan R.
We've passed by here several times and never stopped. There was always alot of vehicles and we were thinking it would take too long (always seem to be in a hurry!). Today we had time and stopped. Boy are we glad we did. Very good food!! We had a bowl of Gumbo and a Seafood Platter and shared. Man was it good. The wait staff was fast and friendly. Couldn't ask for better food or service. I'm usually very picky, but I couldn't find anything to pick here!! 5 Star indeed!!!
(5)Jen B.
Always good seafood. I loved the catfish chips. Beware: the portions are HUGE!!!! I ordered a child's plate and had to pass some of it on to a friend. My family lives further south of New Orleans and we went to meet them. this was a good location to meet in the middle and we've been going there for years. Don't expect there to be much more out this way but it is a fun, out of the way location. Go during the day and you can sit and look at the bayou out back and see the wildlife, too.
(4)Maria P.
Louisiana seafood at its best. Great seafood platter cooked to perfection. Nice atmosphere: cozy friendly hometown feeling. Very tasty fresh Louisiana gulf seafood.
(4)Douglas S.
We had a roast beef sandwich and a 1/2 and 1/2 combo shrimp and oyster po-boy. All were good however not the best we've ever had. They were supposed to come dressed but just had a couple of skinny pieces of iceburg lettuce and a couple of thin slices of tomato. Also over priced in my opinion. The combo po-boy was $16!
(3)Michael B.
Great fried or grilled catfish, all seafood is FRESH! And the bread pudding . . . Delicious! Definitely worth the stop!
(4)Jeff C.
I am giving this place a single star because the food was edible--if not decent. SERVICE SUCKED. 1--10 minutes to get a hello and drink orders placed. 2--20 minutes in...drinks delivered and menus taken...no order placed.... 3--30 minutes in...orders placed. 4--40 minutes in...wife gets her food...i get the wrong plate and send it back(i NEVER SEND IT BACK). 5--50 minutes in...my shrimp poboy arrives...walmart bread and just not great... 6--70 minutes in...i get billed for the wrong plate...and you know the rest. Over rated bloody marys, flakey service, and the catfish chips were over rated too. Go to zydeco or blue crab...i will not go back here... I usually tip 30%+...this time was just 15%.

I heard this place was great - maybe it's because I'm from New Orleans but I found the food just average. Service was mediocre at best. I wouldn't eat here again.
